Valiant Hearts: The Great War, is a colorful single player game that tells the story of four characters who help a young German soldier on the battlefield find his way back to his loving family in a story about survival, sacrifice and friendship. This puzzle adventure game created by Ubisoft that is inspired by letters written during WWI, and features factual snippets about the war throughout its compelling story.
The story begins in the year 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand has been assassinated and Germany has declared war on Russia in response to his death. Expecting war with Germany, France begins to deport all German citizens. This introduces us to Karl who is one of the many Germans to be deported who is forcibly separated from his wife and child. Karl is then drafted into the German army and shortly after Karl’s father-in-law Emile is drafted into the French army leaving Karl’s wife and child to fend for themselves. The story follows Emile and his friends as they fight for their lives, and search loved ones behind enemy lines.
The graphics in this game look great with its 2D hand drawn look, and the sound track that makes you feel the story all the way through out the game. I loved playing this game and it really brings to front the people in war and not the war itself like so many other games do. Should you buy this game? Yes, you should. I have never had a game move me to tears before or get even a basic emotional response out of me, so this game has high merits for its story telling and musical composition. Pick up this great game and enjoy it to the fullest I insist.
