Important Note: Because I’ve already reviewed Episode 1 of The Walking Dead, this review will be more of a summary of my play-through of the game, with as few spoilers as possible. So please be aware that there is the possibility of major plot points being revealed.
Starting my play-through of The Walking Dead Episode 2, the intro brings into perspective just one of the primary issues that would be encountered in a real zombie apocalypse. Hunger. As the name of episode two implies, Starved For Help is about the food supply and limitations of feeding several hungry adults and children.
Throughout the first minutes of this episode, I’m faced with making dialog choices that I feel best represent how I want to be seen by the other characters. Before I know it, there’s a situation that’s the perfect opportunity to shoot a bird for the sake of food. I play it safe, and decide not to take the risk of drawing the attention of the zombies throughout the forest.
It’s not too long after that I’m faced with another major decision, a gruesome one, at that! A man has stepped into a bear trap, and I want to free him, but the bear trap doesn’t have a way to release the lock. Wielding an axe, I make the tough choice of cutting off the man’s foot to save him from the oncoming zombie forces, then make my way back to the Motel with the others.
Back at the Motel, with the new survivors that were rescued, the group of survivors get out of control, not knowing what to do with more mouths to feed. Probably the most heated argument is between Kenny and Lily, leaving me to try to take the side of one of them, or remain neutral. I try to remain neutral, but with little luck. Moving forward, Lily looks to me to spread the rations of food to the survivors, as she doesn’t want to be the one to blame for rations this day. I am now faced with the most difficult of decisions that I can barely manage to make… to whom do I give the food? Who, in the end, will appreciate that I’ve helped them out? Who, when they are not given food, will turn around to be my greatest foe? The choices that I make is not are not easy ones; Clementine: Crackers and cheese Larry: Jerky Carly: Apple Duck: Crackers and Cheese
Continuing through the story, a couple of odd men from a dairy farm appear at the Motel, asking for gas. They say they can help out our group with some food, Carly offers to back us up in case something is fishy. I tell these guys, from a dairy farm, that we’ll spare a couple of gallons of gas for food, and head off, with great suspicion, following these men into the forest.
At the farm, everything seems safe; some small things need repair, and some zombies need pushed off the wire fence. Suddenly, I am ambushed by some crazy people in the forest just outside the farm! It’s extremely dangerous, but I manage to get away to tell the others what happened. The men, and their mother, the owner of the farm, asked what happened, and I explained what happened. The two men from before offered to help me track down the attackers camp.
After talking with a few of the survivors who were with me at the dairy farm, I head out with one of the men from before and find a small camp site with loads of items strewn around. I find a couple of items at the campsite, one of them a camcorder, the other a hat. Suddenly, I and the other man are ambushed by a woman with a crossbow! I try to reason with the woman as much as possible, even tell her how she’s outnumbered 2 to 1. In the end, the man that I was with, shot and killed her. I am still with increasing suspicion of these dairy farmers and their intentions… I assume I’m just going to have to continue to keep my watch and keep my guard up.
Jumping to the end to avoid major spoilers…
Finally, after finishing up the second episode, I must say that I’m thoroughly impressed with Telltale Games’ performance in keeping up with such an impressive series, and keeping the player well immersed within the game’s story, the character development, and the fact that all their choices in the actions they take, and what they say, have such an incredible impact within the game.
The Walking Dead – Episode 2: Starved For Help – is an impressive second part, adding more depth, more clarity, and more realism to the characters and their surroundings, as well as their situation. This series is not just another Zombie Killer, it’s a Zombie Survival game where everything you say and do is remembered by everyone around you in your group, just like in real life. This is a brilliant series that I can’t wait to finish!
