AiRace Speed, the third in a series of games, is the latest downloadable title for the Nintendo 3DS system, and is one of the few racing Nintendo 3DS titles I’ve laid hands on for the system. AiRace Speed is an exciting game with an ambient science fiction soundtrack, beautiful graphics, and intense reflex-driven levels!
AirAce Speed features 18 different tracks, each crafted individually by the developers except for two “endless” maps that are automatically generated. Each level features a leaderboard for both comparison with friends, and the rest of the world. Tracks offer shortcuts, but usually at the risk of more obstacles to the player, however, this is crucial in trying to get the fastest possible time either locally or world-wide!
As of this review, the current fastest speed for Level 2 alone is 1:40.093 by FastGomez . For comparison, my personal best without crashing and full nitro throughout the entire stage is: 1:41.381, placing me in 26th place worldwide.
QubicGames has done a wonderful job with this title visually, and audibly. If you are a fan of high-speed racing games where the slightest move could benefit you or destroy your ship, AiRace Speed will definitely test you and your reflexes!
AiRace Speed also features a total of 42 achievements that can be awarded to the player. An example of a few of these achievements are: ‘Race 20 seconds in reverse’, ‘complete one full lap using Nitro’, ‘complete 3 laps without touching the walls’, and even ‘complete a race 5 seconds faster than the Gold time’.
Overall, AiRace Speed provides a good amount of fun and challenge, especially when adding the Gold Medal challenges, achievements, and online-leaderboards to go after or challenge. The controls of the game do take a bit of getting used to, and once you’re used to them, the challenging levels still pull twists, turns, and obstacles that are sometimes hard to avoid!
The controls for the game are pretty touchy, even when using the Stylus. It takes a while to get used to the controls, even after playing for a while. Granted, I will give the game credit for implementing the idea of the faster you go, the harder it is to control, but it feels the ships could have more control to them with their each different slim designs.
AiRace Speed is a very fun and entertaining game for casual or competitive time trial play.
The added achievements add on additional time to play the game to its fullest.
With beautiful graphics and stunning level design, the game has earned a 5/5 in the graphics category. The added 3D graphics further improve this with increased depth perception of objects that feel as if they’re lunging out of the screen, bringing the innovative technology of the 3DS and added immersion for full enjoyment.
While the music tracks are a great fit for the game and its levels, I feel certain sounds, such as the countdown timer, could’ve sounded better and not felt so bland versus the overall sci-fi feel of the game.
